“No.”
“Humor me.”
Saren ignored him and concentrated on the task at hand. The application was going through the sequencing, but so far it did not appear as if they had a match for the true culprit, or even his known associates.
“Just once.”
Thoughts of the salarian getting away in his private ship heavy on his mind, he replied tiredly: “Why?”
“It’s a colony thing.” Wonderful. Insistence. “For a job well done.” Nihlus kicked a nearby crate of contraband. “Really well done.”
“Fine.”
“You do it like this…”
Their fists met in a firm, strangely satisfying bump. Saren went back to work immediately. Just as well. At least it wasn’t one of those disgusting human gestures that Nihlus tended to pick up.
As Nihlus walked down the hall, he heard a distant echo speak the words “… and will be back shortly.” He broke into a run.
There was no one inside his room–at first glance, anyway. That tricky, tricky man. But the lighting was dim and the ground littered with rumpled clothes. If he tilted his head just right, he could see something shift. Something like a hairline crack in a picture frame. Something out of place with reality itself. He tossed an old shirt at it.

Perfect.
She was the most beautiful thing he’d seen in a while. And, by the Spirits, he’d been all over the galaxy in the past three weeks. To be fortunate enough to see her when he’d merely intended to cool his heels here for a day or two–well, that was a rare blessing. She was sitting right there, just a little ways past the thin glass, which was tinted a shade of blue so light that he doubted anyone but a turian would be able tell.
